Variation in Loblolly

چکیده
The effect of physiographic region on microfibril angle (MFA) in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) ia the southern United States was evaluated. MFA was determined at 1.4,4.6,7.6, 10.7, and 13.7 m up the stem of 59 trees, representing five physiographic regions. A nonlinear mixadeffects model was developed to test for regional differences in the initial value of MFA, the rate at which MFA changes with ring number from pith, and the lower bound of MFA achieved. Our results suggest that the parameters pf interest differ significantly by regioq. It was found that MFA differs significantly between the South Atlantic, Gulf, and Hilly regions, compar#l to the 'North Atlantic and Piedmont regions. The initial value of MFA was found to be smaller in the Piedmont compared to all other regions. Similarly, the rate at which MFA changes with ring number was'fcund to be significantly smaller in the North Atlantic and Piedmont regions. A test of the lower bound o f i M F ~ indicates that the Piedmont region bas a signiflmtty larger low& asymptote. These results combidd indicate thi[ overall, MFA values are larger in the North Atlantic and Piedmont regions. ! Responsiveness of Diverse Families of Loblolly Pine to Fertilization
Loblolly pine is by far the most important forest tree species in the South, with over 1 billion seedlings planted annually by forest industry and non-industrial private forest landowners (McKeand et al. 2003). Genetic gains from tree improvement programs have been large, since geographic and within-provenance variation for growth and adaptive traits in loblolly pine is very large. General tren...

متن کاملAluminum sensitivity of loblolly pine and slash pine seedlings grown in solution culture.
To probe variation in Al sensitivity of two co-occurring pine species, seedlings from six full-sib families of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) and slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) were grown in solution culture containing 4.4 mM (high-Al) or 0.01 mM (low-Al) AlCl(3) at pH 4 for 58 days. On average, both pine species had 41% less total dry weight in the high-Al treatment than in the low-Al tr...

In order to determine the best form factor formula for Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations in Talesh (Western Guilan province-Iran), a number of 110 trees were selected based on their distribution in diameter classes, from 12 to 34 cm (in a two- cm diameter interval). First, several quantitative factors including diameter at breast height, diameter at 0.65 m of height, and diameter at st...

Crown structure, absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) and growth were analyzed in 300 replicated loblolly (Pinus taeda L.) and slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm. var. elliotti) clones to: (1) quantify genetic variation in crown structural traits, growth and APAR at the species, family and clonal levels; and (2) estimate within-family genetic and environmental influences on measu...
متن کاملLeaf-level gas-exchange uniformity and photosynthetic capacity among loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) genotypes of contrasting inherent genetic variation.
Variation in leaf-level gas exchange among widely planted genetically improved loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) genotypes could impact stand-level water use, carbon assimilation, biomass production, C allocation, ecosystem sustainability and biogeochemical cycling under changing environmental conditions. We examined uniformity in leaf-level light-saturated photosynthesis (A(sat)), stomatal conduc...
